Shingo Ali Masuda

Qanun Teacher

Shingo Masuda is a qanoon player and composer from Osaka, Japan.
After studying classical music on the piano for several years, he discovered the Qanoon (Arabic zither) as an instrument. This was followed in 2009 by a trip to Cairo, Egypt, during which he gained experience with Arabic music for the first time.
After his return to Japan he refined the technique of qanoon and the knowledge of maqam music from the Arabic and Turkish tradition and gained practical experience with professional musicians on study trips to Tunisia, Turkey and Greece.
In 2017 he moved to Berlin and played with various band formations there, as in Japan.
In September 2019 he won first prize with the band Japal at the 2nd Creole Contest, a world music band competition in Berlin.
